Why Clinical Trials Are So Important

New drugs, therapies and technologies are available in a number of fields, and include new medications to treat long-term illnesses such as Alzheimer’s disease. None of these would be possible in the United States without clinical trials. Clinical trials are a part of medical research and development protocols that determine the safety, effectiveness, and side effects of new treatments, procedures and medications.

Stem Cell Effects Observation

Clinical trials observe different types of drug and biomedical development treatments and observe their results. Anyone can volunteer to be part of a clinical trial, although some require individuals actually diagnosed with the condition that the proposed medicine or treatment is designed to affect. Volunteers are given a new form of medication and therapy or are treated with a placebo, or harmless substitute. Changes, improvements, and potential side effects of new drugs or therapies in those individuals are then observed.

Stem Cell Clinical Trials Importancy

Hope for Cronic Disease Sufferers

Clinical trials are currently underway, not only in the United States but around the world, for new drugs and therapies in stem cell research and development for the treatment of multiple forms of cancer, Parkinson’s, and Alzheimer’s disease, in addition to future potential treatments of multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and organ regeneration, just to name a few.

Clinical trials may last anywhere from a few weeks to 5 or 10 years. Clinical trials are performed on prenatal diseases and abnormalities, bacterial and fungal diseases, heart and blood diseases, immune system disease, muscle and bone disease, respiratory diseases and skin and other connective tissue diseases, among others.  For example, in the United States alone, over 750 clinical trials are underway for Alzheimer’s disease treatments, while over 1,300 studies are being performed in the study and potential treatments for cognitive disorders such as dementia.
