“How To” Guide: Proper Teeth Brushing

Let’s admit from the very beginning that proper teeth brushing is something most of us do not focus on and we usually hurry and do it quite sloppy. Brushing teeth before breakfast and in the evening before going to bed, is done while barely pressing on the teeth surface. Not to mention mouthwash or dental flossing which some see only in drug stores or in dental offices. It just requires a bit of ambition and attention to prevent tooth decay and so many dental problems. Here are some basics.

Proper Teeth Brushing

proper teeth brushing PlacidWay PlacidBlogFor proper teeth brushing, the toothbrush should be at a 45 degrees angle from the vertical surface of the teeth. Brushing starts from the gum to the tooth vertically (from red to white). Do not press the toothbrush or over brush teeth, plaque is removed by the toothbrush bristles tips.

The external and internal sides of the teeth

The sides of the teeth facing cheek and tongue are brushed by repeated tooth brushing (at least 5 for each surface). The occlusal surfaces are brushed by back and forth moves. Overall, proper teeth brushing should last just over 3 minutes.

For the oral surfaces the same brushing technique applies – using the toothbrush on the gums and the mucous, later getting to the occlusion surface by rotation moves of the toothbrush, spinning the brush on each teeth group. The method is based on the principle that food is deflected on occlusal and incisal surfaces to gums and apical margins, and therefore brushing should be performed in the same “physiological” way.
